Bathtub to Shower Conversions
Bathtub to Shower Conversions
A bathtub to shower conversion (replacing a bathtub with a walk-in shower) is the most popular bathroom remodeling option for many reasons. Most people prefer a shower to a bath. Easier and safer to enter and exit, a walk-in shower has more space, and can be designed with accessories to make your showering experience more personal.
People are not only interested in a safer and more comfortable shower, but also in making their bathrooms more accessible so they can stay in their homes as they age. A shower equipped with the proper safety features allows for safe showering as our physical abilities change.
Aside from being safe, a properly designed walk-in shower offers a more comfortable and relaxing shower experience. Here are some design considerations when converting a tub to a shower.
Converting a Bathtub to a Shower
Fortunately, a tub to shower conversion doesn’t require expensive construction work. Standard shower bases are made to fit in the same space as a bathtub and come with left or right drains to minimize plumbing work. However, code does require that the drain line be changed from 1 1/2″ to 2″.
The demolition required for a bathtub to shower conversion will require a new wall surround. This is the perfect time to get rid of those hard-to-clean tiles walls. Re-Bath’s easy-to-clean grout-free DuraBath wall system reaches seamlessly from the floor to an 8′ ceiling. Add a ceiling panel and you’ll never worry about peeling paint and mold above your shower.
A standard shower base is about 6” tall, but you can get a shower base with a lower threshold, which is easier to step over. A barrier-free shower base has no curb, which allows a wheelchair to roll into the shower, or gives a person with limited leg mobility easier access. Also, a shower base has a flatter surface than the bottom of a bathtub providing you with safer footing.
Choosing Shower Design Options
Shower Seat: One of the most requested features for a tub to shower conversion is a seat. A seat gives you a comfortable place to shave legs or relax. Seats are available in corner, bench, fold-down, and floating styles. Shower controls can be located so you can adjust water temperature and volume when seated. A handheld shower within reach of the seat gives an even more flexible showering experience.
Hand-held Shower: Personal handheld showers typically have a six-foot hose, which makes showering children and pets easy. A handheld shower installed on a slide-pole allows the height of the showerhead to be adjusted, so you can take a shower without getting your hair wet, or accommodate a taller person.
Body Sprays: For a touch of luxury, install a few body sprays. Body sprays are individual spray heads that are permanently mounted on the shower walls and direct water at different parts of the body. Adding just two body sprays to your shower will provide a luxurious shower experience.
Instead of a standard showerhead, consider one with multiple spray patterns. Use a massage setting to soothe your neck and shoulders, or a delicate rain spray for a lighter shower. A more forceful spray pattern gives an invigorating shower.
Shower Doors or Shower Curtain: Showers can be enclosed with a shower curtain or a shower door. If you choose a shower curtain, select a crescent rod, which gives more room inside the shower. Shower doors come in a variety of finishes and glass patterns. Finishes include silver, brushed nickel, polished nickel, oil rubbed bronze, black, white, and biscuit. Glass patterns include clear, obscure, hammered, antique, and rain.
Making the Decision
Sometimes people fear that doing a tub to shower conversion in a master bath will devalue their home. I found no concrete evidence that a master bath without a tub would affect the resale of a home, but I do know that as our population ages, accessible bathing becomes increasingly important.
